Sourcefire Inc., the Columbia network security company that started in its founder’s living room and has since grown to a 174-person business, said yesterday that it plans to go public.

Editor: Sourcefire originally started out as the Snort IDS (Intrusion Detection System) which was released publicly under an Open Source license. Over the years the company Sourcefire has managed to commercialize aspects of it successfully while continuing to release the core elements under an Open Source license. A year ago when Sourcefire announced plans that Checkpoint would acquire it the deal was blocked by the US government.
